Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres (April 16, 1971 until March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion led her to be one of the most well-known entertainers from Mexico of all time. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her at third on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and the Latin chart of songs. The media dubbed her the "Tejano Madonna" because of her fashion choices. Her clothes choices also makes her among the top Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized in the 1980s , and was barred from performances at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, which was a male-dominated genre. The acclaim she received grew after she received the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the year in 1987. The award was won nine times. In 1989 she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album, Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive weeks. Many music critics referred to it as the "breakthrough record" of her musical career because of its commercial popularity. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and became her signature track. Live! (1993) was nominated for Best Mexican/American Album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most popular Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was widely praised as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first period of commercialization because it became one the most popular Latin music subgenres of the time.
